Satellite Event: New Technologies to Improve Healthcare in Low and Middle Income Countries

On the 17th and 18th of September 2019, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) hosted the meeting “Using new technologies to improve healthcare in low and middle income countries”. The meeting was organized in collaboration between Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) and the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK as part of the Global Grand Challenge Satellite event program.

Participants were a mixture of biomedical engineers, computer scientists and clinicians from Vietnam, Asia and Europe. There were the lectures, interactive sessions and panel discussions about Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and current challenges in the care of critically ill patients in low and middle-income countries as well as innovative solutions to address these challenges. The meeting was a wonderful opportunity to bring together local, regional and global stakeholders in healthcare and biomedical engineering, strengthen existing partnerships and create new networks. We hope this meeting will facilitate new collaborative projects between clinicians and engineers from around the region and lay the foundation for future work together.
